- These 7 teams came out on top at the Trade Deadline
These 7 teams came out on top at the Trade Deadline The MLB Trade Deadline has been the main topic of baseball discussion for weeks, but that didn’t stop a lot of wild, dramatic trades from happening in the last 10 minutes, even with all that time and all the deals made in the days before the Deadline. It’s the ideal way for the Deadline to be. Trades don’t need to be a win-or-lose proposition: Both teams can profit from making a swap. But these things also don’t occur in a vacuum: What you do, compared to what your rivals do, matters. With the stretch run just around the corner, this is the last opportunity to load up. You want to be one of the winners. So, who are the winners at this Deadline? Here are seven teams that stand out. Astros The Rangers could be on the winners list, and you can certainly argue for them, but they probably don’t feel like winners now that they have to deal with Justin Verlander again. It always felt a little odd not having Verlander in an Astros uniform, and now he’s back, just when the Astros need him the most: The Astros’ rotation seems complete in a way it hasn’t all season. They had to trade two of their best prospects (Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford) for Verlander, but with the amount of money the Mets are chipping in, and the way Verlander is pitching right now, it was surely not a tough decision. The Rangers are obviously better with Max Scherzer and Jordan Montgomery (by the way, of all the pitchers traded at the Deadline, the one with the highest 2023 FanGraphs WAR is Montgomery), so they’re not exactly losers here, but the fact remains: They had the chance to put away the somewhat-average Astros for months now, they didn’t … and now the Astros have Verlander back. Rays. The Rays’ incredible start to the season resulted in a big division lead that, gradually, shrunk until the Orioles erased it completely, largely because the team, because of injuries, began to run out of starting pitching. But acquiring Aaron Civale – who, doubts about his underlying numbers aside, has been fantastic this year – gives them quality innings at the time they need it most. How big a winner you consider them may depend on how much you think of the 2023 St. Louis Cardinals who, may we remind you, were one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this year. The teams battling with the Rays for the division title, the Orioles and the Blue Jays, brought in a total of five Cardinals: Jack Flaherty (Orioles); Paul DeJong, Jordan Hicks, Génesis Cabrera, Chris Stratton (Blue Jays). Maybe those guys pay off. But you certainly can see why the Rays would trust Civale a lot more. Cubs One month ago, if you’d have asked the question, “What team will get the best hitter available at the Deadline?” it’d be tough to find anyone who would have chosen the Cubs. But Jeimer Candelario – who, we remind you, has a World Series ring with the Cubs (he played five games for them in 2016 before being traded to the Tigers for Alex Avila and Justin Wilson) – might be the biggest bat who ended up switching teams, and he plays a position (third base) where the Cubs desperately needed help. Enter your email Sign up And of note: The Brewers and (especially) the Reds went very small at the Deadline. Neither looks that much better today than they looked last week. The Cubs sure do. They’ve got an uphill climb to catch those two. But they’ve got the best run differential in the NL Central and are red-hot. They’ve given themselves a chance. Padres The Padres aren’t catching the Dodgers, so they’re not the biggest beneficiaries of the Dodgers’ frustrating inability to bring in much rotation help. But they also have seven games left against the Dodgers – including four this weekend – and, more to the point, the Padres look as prepared as anyone in the National League Wild Card race to make a run. They’ve been underachievers all year, but the underlying numbers say this team is better than their record … and they’ve been hot, and getting healthier, lately. Their Deadline reinforcements – including Ji-Man Choi, Rich Hill, Scott Barlow, and Garrett Cooper – weren’t splashy, but they’ll be helpful, particularly Barlow, a big bullpen arm they need. Maybe the Padres will fight their way into the playoffs and maybe they won’t. But one thing is clear: They’re the one team no one wants to face in October if they make it. Marlins The NL Wild Card race is unbelievable right now, so you can be forgiven if you didn’t realize that the Marlins hold the third spot and No. 6 seed at this point. This is not a spot the Marlins often find themselves in, so you have to give them credit for doing their best to make the most of it. This team needs offense, badly, and Jake Burger and Josh Bell will give them power they desperately need. (Wouldn’t it be something if Bell does for the Marlins after this year’s Deadline what everyone thought he would for the Padres after last year’s?) Throw in the bullpen adds of David Robertson and Jorge López, and they’re as well-positioned as they’ve been in many a moon. The Marlins are making a run at it. Good for them. Mets OK, OK, OK: So this year didn’t work out the way anyone wanted it to. But now that it has crumbled, isn’t what Steve Cohen and the Mets are doing exactly what every team’s fans should want their owners to do? It’s very tough to get the sort of young prospects the Mets landed – it’s astonishing how rarely it happens anymore – so it requires spending money. And that’s what the Mets did: They folded, cut their losses and got the best value they could out of a losing hand. Would people have rather the Mets not traded Max Scherzer and just let him exercise his opt-out next year and leave for nothing? Spending money isn’t just about buying short-term free agents: It’s about deploying it in ways that help your team in the long term too, and the likes of Luisangel Acuña (Scherzer trade), Marco Vargas (Robertson), Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford (Verlander) should help them a lot down the road. No team boosted its farm system more this week than New York did. Mets fans can mourn what went wrong this year. But they don’t have to be stuck on it: The team is moving on, smartly, and so can they. Angels The Angels are better because they have C.J. Cron, and Randal Grichuk, and Lucas Giolito, and Reynaldo Lopez, and Dominic Leone. But the real reason they’re a winner is that they get two more months – at least! – to get to watch Shohei Ohtani. We’ll see how it turns out for them in the standings. But no matter what: Angels fans get to watch that guy, every night, in a pennant chase. That sounds like a winner to me.
- Rex Heuermann, alleged Gilgo Beach murderer, says nothing at court; huge amount of evidence disclose
Rex Heuermann, alleged Gilgo Beach murderer, says nothing at court; huge amount of evidence disclosed by Suffolk County prosecutors NEW YORK — A Long Island prosecutor spoke for the entire hearing Tuesday as Rex Heuermann, the accused Gilgo Beach killer, remained silent in a Suffolk County courtroom after his attorney received some of their huge pile of evidence in the horrific cold case. Heuermann, 59, had a blank look on his face at the hearing where he showed up in handcuffs, with a chain around his ankles, to answer to murder charges in the deaths of three Long Island sex workers more than 10 years ago. The defendant, wearing a dark blue blazer, button-down shirt and sneakers, only briefly looked back at the crowded courtroom where Suffolk District Attorney Raymond Tierney said some relatives of the victims were present. “We have a lot of information, evidence, photographs, reports to give to the defense counsel,” said Tierney. “It is a huge amount of material, to say the least.” Heuermann is charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello, who all vanished over a 14-month period in 2009 and 2010. The cases remained unsolved until Suffolk County police reopened the investigation in 2022, and the Long Island father of two was arrested a year later. Prosecutors say Heuermann is still the main suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who was last seen alive on July 9, 2007. Her remains were discovered in the same isolated area of Ocean Parkway as the other three victims. Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Santomartino handled the hearing for prosecutors, stating that authorities had given the defense more than 2,500 pages of documents, along with about 100 hours of surveillance video taken outside the suspect’s home and office before his July 13 arrest. The hearing began about 30 minutes late as prosecutors met privately with defense attorney Michael Brown and Judge Timothy Mazzei. The two sides agreed on a confidentiality deal that prevented the sharing of any copies of evidence with the public. The towering 6-foot-7 defendant pleaded not guilty one day after he was arrested on a Manhattan street as he left his real estate office on Fifth Ave. “He’s a man who has never been arrested before,” said Brown. “He’s claimed his innocence from the start of this case. So he’s doing as well as he can at this point in time. He’s eager to have his day in court.” Heuermann was scheduled for his next hearing on Sept. 27, and Brown said his client wanted a trial instead of taking any plea deal. Police finally caught the elusive serial killer suspect based on a tip from a Long Island pimp, a DNA sample from a pizza crust and his own incriminating internet searches about the crimes and his victims. Investigators searched his suburban Massapequa Park home for 12 days, with authorities saying they found a “massive amount” of evidence inside the house. It was unclear if the killings happened inside the defendant’s suburban home, where authorities found nearly 300 guns and a walk-in vault in the basement. Authorities said after Heuermann’s arrest that he was also a suspect in another six unsolved killings where bodies were found near the same area of suburban Suffolk County.
- The mystery of the death of New Jersey Governor Sheila Oliver, a pioneering political leader
The mystery of the death of New Jersey Governor Sheila Oliver, a pioneering political leader The death of New Jersey Governor Sheila Oliver, a pioneering political leader, is a mystery that has shocked and saddened many people. Oliver, who was the first Black woman to serve as lieutenant governor and the first woman of color elected to statewide office in New Jersey, died on August 1, 2023, at the age of 7112. She was hospitalized on Monday for an undisclosed medical condition while she was acting as governor in the absence of Gov. Phil Murphy, who was on vacation in Italy13. The cause of her death has not been revealed by her family or the authorities14. Oliver had a long and distinguished career in public service, starting as a local school board member and rising to become the speaker of the state assembly, the second Black woman in the nation to lead a state legislative chamber12. She was selected by Murphy as his running mate in 2017 and won the election with him in 2018. As lieutenant governor, she also oversaw the Department of Community Affairs, which coordinates state aid to towns and cities and supervises code enforcement1. She signed several bills into law as acting governor, including one that reformed the juvenile justice system in four cities1. Oliver was praised by Murphy and other leaders as a trailblazer, a friend and a hero who dedicated her life to serving the people of New Jersey and uplifting the community12. Her death leaves a void in the state’s political landscape and a legacy of inspiration for future generations. The cause of death was not disclosed, but Oliver had long-term health issues that she kept private, and in recent months appeared at only a few public events. On Monday, the governor’s office announced that Oliver had been hospitalized and “was unable to fulfill the duties of the Lieutenant Governor” - Governor Phil Murphy was on vacation in Italy - leaving Senate President Nick Scutari as acting governor.
- 'Arrow' Star Stephen Amell's remarkable attitude to the actors' strike.
'Arrow' Star Stephen Amell's remarkable attitude to the actors' strike. What does the Church think of this? Stephen Amell is an actor who played Oliver Queen in the superhero TV series Arrow, and appeared in other DC shows on The CW. He is now starring in a new show, Heels, about wrestling on Starz. Amell recently expressed his disappointment with the strike of actors in Hollywood, which could affect the production of his show and others. He said he did not support the strike, and that he would cross the picket line if he had to. The church’s view on this issue may vary depending on the perspective and values of different denominations and individuals. However, some possible biblical principles that could be applied are: The church values human dignity and justice, and supports the rights of workers to fair wages and conditions. The Bible teaches that workers deserve their pay (Luke 10:7), that employers should not exploit or oppress their workers (James 5:4-6), and that God cares for the poor and the oppressed (Psalm 72:12-14). The church values peace and reconciliation, and encourages dialogue and negotiation to resolve conflicts. The Bible teaches that Christians should live in harmony with one another (Romans 12:16), that they should seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34:14), and that they should forgive as they have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13). The church values stewardship and responsibility, and urges people to use their gifts and talents for God’s glory and the common good. The Bible teaches that Christians should work hard and honestly (Ephesians 4:28), that they should do everything as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23-24), and that they should use their gifts to serve others (1 Peter 4:10). USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Amell and SAG-AFTRA for comment. Hollywood actors voted to strike in July, joining already-striking writers in a move that shut down the production of countless movies and TV shows. "I went in in earnest, thinking we could avert the strike, so the gravity of this move is not lost on me," Screen Actors Guild president Fran Drescher said on July 13 at a news conference in Los Angeles announcing the strike.
- Leprosy could be endemic in Central Florida, CDC says. What to know about the disease.
What does the bible say about leprosy? Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that is caused by bacteria that mainly affect the peripheral nerves, skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. It can cause various skin lesions and nerve damage. The diagnosis is clinical and confirmed by biopsy. The treatment is usually with dapsone and other antibiotics. Patients quickly become non-infectious after starting treatment. Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases in human history, and the Bible mentions it and the discrimination against lepers. Despite the biblical reminder, lepers are still stigmatized and violated human rights in many parts of the world today. Leprosy is not highly contagious (contrary to popular belief), rarely fatal and can be treated effectively with antibiotics, but it still causes significant social discrimination. The psychological impact of leprosy is very serious. The Bible describes leprosy as a punishment from God for sin, and lepers were often ostracized and forced to live outside the city. The concept of leprosy in the Bible is not only a physical disease but also a spiritual one. Leprosy was seen as a clear sign of sin and moral impurity, and the isolation that it required was meant to protect the community from contamination. However, the Bible also shows God’s compassion and healing power for lepers. In the Old Testament, there are stories of lepers who were healed by God’s intervention, such as Naaman (2 Kings 5) and four lepers who found food in an enemy camp (2 Kings 7). In the New Testament, Jesus healed many lepers with his touch and word, such as the ten lepers (Luke 17:11-19) and a man with leprosy who begged him for help (Mark 1:40-45). Jesus also sent his disciples to heal lepers as part of their mission (Matthew 10:8). Therefore, the Bible teaches us to have compassion and care for lepers, as they are our brothers and sisters who suffer from a disease that can be cured. The Bible also teaches us to repent of our sins and seek God’s forgiveness and healing, as leprosy is a symbol of our spiritual condition. Leprosy is often feared as a highly infectious, devastating condition — and the subject of biblical stories depicting it as a curse from God — but we now know it can be cured. However, stigma around the disease persists. “Those suffering from it are isolated and discriminated against in many places where the disease is seen,” the CDC notes. The World Health Organization says more than 200,000 new cases are reported every year in more than 120 countries, with the largest numbers in Brazil, India and Indonesia. In the United States, about 150 people get infected annually, according to the CDC. What causes leprosy? Leprosy is usually spread through prolonged close contact with an untreated infected person. Casual contact does not lead to infection — you can’t catch leprosy from shaking hands, hugging or sitting next to someone during a meal or on the bus, the CDC states. “It is not known exactly how Hansen’s disease spreads between people. Scientists currently think it may happen when a person with Hansen’s disease coughs or sneezes, and a healthy person breathes in the droplets containing the bacteria,” the organization’s website reads. “Prolonged, close contact with someone with untreated leprosy over many months is needed to catch the disease.” Fortunately, about 90% of people “tend to be naturally immune,” Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious diseases specialist at Florida International University, told CBS Miami. “It’s only about 10% of people who can get leprosy, and it’s a whole spectrum of how the disease may manifest,” she said. She also said there are several reasons cases appear to be on the rise. “The problem here in the United States is partly people with leprosy coming here from other places,” Marty said. She also pointed to the role of the armadillos. “The problem is the armadillos that acquired leprosy many, may years ago back when we had a leprosy colony in Carville, Louisiana, and those armadillos have slowly moved — well, they’ve spread all over Texas and Louisiana, and then they’ve come over to Central Florida, so we’re seeing cases there as well.” Leprosy symptoms It takes time to develop signs of the disease due to the slow-growing nature of the bacteria. The CDC says symptoms of leprosy to the skin include: Skin patches that are discolored Skin growths Skin that is thick, stiff or dry Ulcers on the soles of feet that are painless Swelling or lumps on the face or earlobes that are painless Loss of eyebrows or eyelashes Symptoms to the nerves include: Numbness of affected areas of the skin Muscle weakness or paralysis Nerves that are enlarged Eye problems that may lead to blindness If left untreated, advcanced signs may develop, including: Paralysis and crippling of hands and feet Shortening of toes and fingers due to reabsorption Ulcers on the bottoms of the feet Blindness Nose disfigurement How can leprosy be cured? Hansen’s disease can be cured with a combination of usually two to three antibiotics. “Treatment usually lasts between one to two years,” the CDC says. “The illness can be cured if treatment is completed as prescribed.” Early diagnosis is also important, since treatment can cure the disease and prevent it from getting worse, but treatment does not reverse nerve damage that may have already occurred, the organization notes.
- What happened to Paul Reubens, the truth about his death
What happened to Paul Reubens, the truth about his death Paul Reubens, the actor who played Pee-wee Herman, passes away at 70 from cancerPee-wee character was a cultural icon for most of the 1980s Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian who invented the character Pee-wee Herman that became a cultural sensation through movies and TV shows, has passed away. He was 70. Reubens died Sunday night after a six-year battle with cancer that he did not reveal, his publicist said in a statement. I’m sorry for not sharing what I’ve been dealing with the last six years, Reubens said in a statement released Monday with the announcement of his death. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you. The character with his too-small gray suit, white bulky shoes and red bow tie was best known for the film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and the television series Pee-wee’s Playhouse. The Pee-wee character would become a cultural icon for most of the 1980s, though an indecent exposure arrest in 1991 would send him into entertainment exile for years. Reubens created Pee-wee when he was part of the Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings in the late 1970s. The live Pee-wee Herman Show debuted at a Los Angeles theater in 1981 and was a hit with both kids during matinees and adults at a midnight show. The show closely resembled the format the Saturday morning TV Pee-wee’s Playhouse would follow years later, with Herman living in a wild and wacky home with a series of stock-character visitors, including one, Captain Karl, played by the late Saturday Night Live star Phil Hartman. In the plot, Pee-wee secretly wishes to fly. HBO broadcast the show as a special. Pee Wee got his wish to fly, Steve Martin tweeted after his death. Thanks Paul Reubens for the brilliant off the wall comedy. Reubens took Pee-wee to the big screen in 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. The film, in which Pee-wee’s prized bike is stolen, was said to be loosely based on Vittorio De Sica’s Italian neo-realist classic, The Bicycle Thief. The film, directed by Tim Burton and co-written by Phil Hartman of Saturday Night Live, sent Pee-wee on a nationwide adventure. The movie was a success, grossing $40 million, and continued to spawn a cult following for its oddball humor. A sequel followed three years later in the less well-received Big Top Pee-wee, in which Pee-wee seeks to join a circus. Reubens’ character wouldn’t get another movie starring role until 2016’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, for Netflix. Judd Apatow produced Pee-wee’s big-screen comeback. His television series, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, ran for five seasons, earned 22 Emmys and attracted not only children but adults to Saturday-morning TV. Both silly and subversive and championing nonconformity, the Pee-wee universe was a trippy place, populated by things like a talking armchair and a friendly pterodactyl. The host, who is fond of secret words and loves fruit salad so much he once married it, is prone to lines like, I know you are, but what am I? and Why don’t you take a picture; it’ll last longer? The act was a hit because it worked on multiple levels, even though Reubens insists that wasn’t the plan. It’s for kids, Reubens told The Associated Press in 2010. People have tried to get me for years to go, It wasn’t really for kids, right?’ Even the original show was for kids. I always censored myself to have it be kid-friendly. The whole thing has been just a gut feeling from the beginning," Reubens told the AP. "That’s all it ever is and I think always ever be. Much as people want me to dissect it and explain it, I can’t. One, I don’t know, and two, I don’t want to know, and three, I feel like I’ll hex myself if I know. Jimmy Kimmel posted on Instagram that Paul Reubens was like no one else a brilliant and original comedian who made kids and their parents laugh at the same time. He never forgot a birthday and shared his genuine delight for silliness with everyone he met." Reubens’ career was derailed when he was arrested for indecent exposure in an adult movie theater in Sarasota, Florida, where he grew up. He was handed a small fine but the damage to the character was incalculable. He became the frequent butt of late-night talk show jokes and the perception of Reubens immediately changed. The moment that I realized my name was going to be said in the same sentence as children and sex, that’s really intense," Reubens told NBC in 2004. "That’s something I knew from that very moment, whatever happens past that point, something’s out there in the air that is really bad. Reubens said he got plenty of offers to work, but told the AP that most of them wanted to take “advantage of the luridness of my situation”," and he didn’t want to do them. It just changed, he said. "Everything changed. In 2001, Reubens was arrested and charged with misdemeanor possession of child pornography after police seized images from his computer and photography collection, but the allegation was reduced to an obscenity charge and he was given three years probation. Born Paul Rubenfield in Peekskill, New York, Reubens, the eldest of three children, grew up primarily in Sarasota before going to Boston University and the California Institute of the Arts. Reubens would also act as non-Pee-wee characters including in Burton’s 1992 movie Batman Returns, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film and a guest-star run on the TV series Murphy Brown.
- Megan Rapinoe wins thanks to her faith in God
Megan Rapinoe wins thanks to her faith in God Megan Rapinoe is one of the most famous and influential soccer players in the world. She has won two World Cups, an Olympic gold medal, and numerous individual awards. She is also an outspoken advocate for social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and equal pay. But what many people may not know is that Rapinoe is also a person of faith who credits God for her success. Rapinoe was raised in a conservative Christian family in northern California. She grew up across the street from a church and attended a Christian school. She told Yahoo! that her faith was “a huge part of my life growing up.” She also said that she still believes in God and prays before every game. “I think God wants people to be happy,” she said. “I think God wants people to love themselves and love other people and be respectful of other people.” Rapinoe came out as gay in 2012 and has been dating WNBA star Sue Bird since 2016. She said that being queer has not affected her relationship with God, but rather enriched it. “I feel like I have such a closer connection to God now because I’m being honest with myself,” she said. “And I feel like I can have more of a genuine relationship with God because I’m not lying or hiding anything.” Rapinoe is currently playing in her fourth and final Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. She has played a limited role on the field, but has been a leader and mentor off it. She said that she is grateful for the opportunity to represent her country and her faith on the world stage. “I think God has given me this amazing platform to do good things in the world and to inspire people and to help people,” she said. “And I think that’s what God wants from all of us.”
- Angus Cloud, an actor in 'Euphoria', dies at 25, what is the real reason?
Angus Cloud, an actor in 'Euphoria', dies at 25, what is the real reason? Angus Cloud, who portrayed the drug dealer Fezco “Fez” O’Neill on HBO’s “Euphoria,” passed away on Monday in Oakland, Calif. He was 25. The Oakland Fire Dept. said it arrived at a medical emergency around 11:30 a.m., and the patient was “already dead.” The cause of death was unclear, the fire department said. The Oakland Police Dept. confirmed that it is still an “active death investigation.” “We are heartbroken to have to say farewell to an amazing human being today,” Cloud’s family said in a statement. “As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in many ways. Last week he laid his father to rest and deeply suffered from this loss. The only consolation we have is knowing Angus is now with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was honest about his struggle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not cope with this on their own in silence.” The statement went on, “We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone. We ask for privacy at this time as we are still grieving this tragic loss.” Cloud became famous playing Fez on HBO’s Emmy-winning teen drama series “Euphoria.” He was a main character on the show’s first two seasons. His other acting credits included the films “North Hollywood” (2021) and “The Line”” (2023). He was recently cast alongside Melissa Berrera in a new horror movie at Universal Pictures from “Scream 6” directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Cloud also starred in various music videos such as Noah Cyrus’ “All Three,” Juice WRLD’s “Cigarettes” and Becky G and Karol G’s “Miamiii.” Last year, Cloud was an honoree at Variety’s annual Power of Young Hollywood event and remembered being picked off the street to star in “Euphoria.” Cloud’s role as Fez was his first acting job. “I was with some friends,” he said. “We were just hanging out.” “It does annoy me,” Cloud added, “when people are like, ‘It must be so easy! You get to go in and be yourself.’ I’m like, ‘Why don’t you go and do that?’ It’s not that simple. I brought a lot to the character. You can believe what you want. It ain’t got nothing to do with me.” “Euphoria” casting director Jennifer Venditti also said, “People think, ‘Oh, he just shows up. He’s just this lazy stoner.’ Angus doesn’t get enough credit.” Cloud was a fan favorite on “Euphoria,” which has not yet started production on its third season. “We are incredibly heartbroken to learn of the passing of Angus Cloud,” HBO said in a statement. “He was immensely talented and a beloved part of the HBO and Euphoria family. We extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family during this difficult time.” Born Conor Angus Cloud Hickey, he attended Oakland School of the Arts with his “Euphoria” co-star Zendaya, and was cast in “Euphoria” while working at a Brooklyn restaurant.

In fact, it is estimated that NPs provide 80-90% of the primary care services that doctors provide and in 20 states, they have “full practice authority”, meaning they do not have to work under the supervision of a doctor. 10. Software Architect Average annual salary: $105,329. We’re sure you’ve heard of a software developer, but have you heard of a software architect? Although the difference between the two positions can be blurry, a software architect creates a design of the software that needs to be developed, while a software developer will take the design and make it a reality. If you thrive in a highly collaborative work environment and love software, this is a great, high-paying job for you.
- Doing this on a regular basis can help extend your life, according to science.
Doing this on a regular basis can help extend your life, according to science. It can be difficult to make time for leisure activities with today’s hectic lifestyle. However, recent reports from the BMJ Journal suggest that by spending time attending art exhibitions, touring museums, or going to the theater, you can help yourself extend your lifespan. Researchers at the University of London shared these discoveries recently. They studied 6,000 people aged over 50 and found that: People who regularly take part in artistic activities have a 31% lower risk of dying early than those who don’t appreciate art. In fact, with only one or two visits to artistic events per year, you can lower your risk of early death by 14%. Associate Professor Daisy Fancourt, one of the co-authors of this study, said: “While habits like smoking, drinking alcohol are certainly ‘prophets’ of death, these leisure pleasures - often regarded as unrelated to health - are very beneficial for health and longevity.” This study, which used data collected from 2004 onwards, tracked the habits of the participants and noted their attendance at exhibitions and performances, including opera and orchestral performances. (If you are a movie fan, then apologies: movies were not part of this study.) The reasons why people who take part in artistic activities live longer are not fully understood yet. Firstly, because economic and social differences matter a lot in whether a person can join in artistic events or not. And even though financial capacity is important, it is not the only factor. According to Katie Hunt’s report for CNN, researchers also observed that: mental health, cognitive differences, involvement in civic social activities, mobility and disability, as well as deprivation also affect longevity. However, if appreciating art has been shown to be very helpful for easing stress in the mind - then even if you are not Michelangelo - Fancourt can still say that: art is a buffer against stress and fosters creativity to help people cope with changing situations. It also helps people develop a type of social resource - which is the ability to get emotional support and understanding of emotions that help people live longer. Katie Hunt said further: “We think that: Art helps to feel more meaningful, so it has an important role.” While deeper studies are required to verify that connecting with art can help us live longer, this study also gives us more incentive to go out and enjoy art. If your area does not have an art exhibition or museum, you can arrange a trip or pilgrimage to the sanctuaries dedicated to the holy ones. Of course, you can also take time staying after Mass to admire the artworks right in your own church. #bible #christianity #jesuschrist #God #faith #prayerworks #ypシ #quotes #DailyGod
- An additional child is spared from abortion by pro-life supporters
An additional child is spared from abortion by pro-life supporters Her mom had planned to abort her, but a campaign of prayer altered that. To protect her identity, we won’t use the mother’s real name. Instead, we will call her Mercedes, after the title of the Virgin Mary as the patroness of the Dominican Republic, where she comes from. She was 21 years old when she got pregnant for the second time last August. She had told her friends that she had “lost” her first pregnancy, which was from a relationship with an abusive man, after “falling down the stairs.” But those who knew the father had their doubts… Ana, a “guardian angel” of 40 Days for Life A friend of hers had given her Ana’s phone number a few weeks before that miscarriage. Ana was a “guardian angel” of the Spanish pro-life organization 40 Days for Life (40DPV in Spanish). This movement is based on prayer, but it also has people who support and accompany (as “guardian angels”) mothers in difficulty who choose to continue their pregnancy. In fact, that same friend had had a baby with the help of Ana and the 40DPV movement. And even though Mercedes ended up losing that baby, Ana stayed in touch with her to help her with the many challenges she faced every day. Single, working as a waitress in a nightclub… Mercedes found out she was pregnant again at the start of last fall. Everyone around her told her to abort. Ana explains why she faced so much pressure: She was in a very bad economic situation. She wasn’t sure who the father was, but it was probably a man who wasn’t even her boyfriend. And although he didn’t abuse her like the other one did, he had a very unhealthy relationship with her and had refused to take responsibility for the baby. Besides, she worked as a waitress at a nightclub in Madrid, and they would fire her as soon as they knew she was pregnant. Overwhelmed by her situation, Mercedes made an appointment to abort her second baby. What she didn’t know was that, right then, the 40 Days for Life movement was starting one of its prayer campaigns. That would change everything. Saved from abortion “by prayer” Ana explains: At 40 Days for Life, we know that all saves are the result of prayer, even if they aren’t women who literally stop next to volunteers praying at the doors of an abortion clinic. Because those of us who pray to God for life to prevail over abortion, do so asking Him to guide and help all pregnant women in difficulty, and offering ourselves so that He can use us if He wants to. It takes a lot of bravery and clarity to face situations as hard as those faced by many of the women we help. And although we’re here for them, in the end it is they who have to make the decision to give their child the chance to live. That’s why they need God to guide them and take away their fears. And that was exactly what happened in Mercedes’ case. Hundreds of volunteers of all ages were undertaking a campaign of prayer shifts — uninterrupted, peaceful, and silent — in front of abortion clinics all over Spain. Meanwhile, against all odds and with no one to support her, Mercedes felt in her heart the desire to ask for help. The abortion appointment had already been set, but Mercedes picked up the phone and called Ana. Complete help for pregnant women You might expect this story to end after the birth of Mariana, who now babbles, laughs, cries, and wakes up in her crib like any other baby. However, the ending is even happier. Because, as Ana points out, “contrary to what many abortionists say, pro-lifers are not indifferent to women; quite the opposite.” For this reason, today Mercedes has started a new life. She now lives in a coastal city, with a new job, a new apartment, and all the material and economic support that she and her daughter will need for the next years. In part this is thanks to the collaboration of Ana, the spiritual help of 40 Days for Life, and the generous support of various pro-life associations in Madrid, such as Red Madre. However, they are not the main cause. Because, as Ana, who is the godmother of several children saved from abortion, concludes: “The defense of life and the defeat of abortion is something so humanly impossible in our society, that every baby born is first and foremost thanks to God, who never forsakes those who ask for his help.” #bible #christianity #jesuschrist #God #faith #prayerworks #ypシ #quotes #DailyGod
- What makes us able to connect with God?
What makes us able to connect with God? Jesus doesn’t say, Come to me when you have everything handled and under control. … The faithful lower themselves in order not to be captive. They yield in order to remain free … Jesus doesn’t say, Come to me when you have everything under control and everything is in order. He says, Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened. That is: Come to me when your life is in shambles. Come to me when you are swamped by problems with no solutions. Come to me when there seems to be no way out. Come to me A medieval spiritual master, Nicholas of Lyra (+1349), imagines Jesus saying, “Come, you who are shut out, to me, the gate of truth. Come, you who are ill, to me, the remedy of salvation. Come, you who are stranded, to me, the safe harbor.” Another great of the Middle Ages, Nicholas of Gorran (+1295) wrote: “How admirable is the regard our God has for us. He invites foes, he urges the guilty, he attracts the ungrateful.” The key is to continue what we began at Christmas: to come to Jesus — O come, let us adore him! Coming to Jesus means coming away from our own stale thoughts, our doubts, our pessimism. “The closer a being is to God,” says St. Thomas Aquinas, “the farther away it is from nothingness.” So we just have to get close to Jesus. We have to come to him, with our powerlessness, our nothingness, our need. Gentle and humble But why would we? Humility was not a virtue in the ethics of ancient Greece and Rome, which linked humility with failure and shame. Yet humility is what Jesus puts before us to attract us. Why? Because authentic humility “is what makes a human being capable of God” (St. Thomas Aquinas). Which is why we find it so appealing when we discover humility in others. St. Ambrose reflects on this: “Jesus did not say, Learn of me because I am mighty; he did not say, Learn of me because I am glorious. He said, Learn of me because I am humble, for that is something we can copy.” There is something irresistibly unique about humility. “Humility is the refusal to exist apart from God” (Simone Weil). That existence is what Jesus is inviting us to. He does so by way of mildness, gentleness. Why is gentleness so important? As the Catholic philosopher Louis Lavelle (+1951) explains: Gentleness is active good will towards other people, not only for what they are, but for what they could be. It enables us to see many possibilities. Gentleness enables us to accept all the laws of our human condition, and in doing so, to rise above them. He who rebels against these laws shows how deeply he hates them and is their slave, but he who accepts them in a spirit of gentleness goes through them, and fills them with light. Of these laws also it must be said that their yoke is easy and their burden light. True gentleness is so thoughtful, so discreet, and so active that, when we meet it, we are always amazed that it can do us so much good, while at the same time seemingly giving us nothing. Take my yoke Why would we ever want to be “yoked”? The word for “yoke” actually has the same roots as the word for “spouse.” Christ’s invitation Take my yoke upon you is the promise of a unique union, an intimacy, a bonding in love leading to the greatest personal fulfillment and fruitfulness. But the yoke is not forced. It is something we freely take upon ourselves. This light yoke, which we are not obliged to accept, we must desire, we must embrace, through an act of free will constantly renewed. The faithful humble themselves in order not to be enslaved. They surrender in order to stay free (François Mauriac). Jesus’ yoke is easy and his burden light because “he who bears mercy and carries love does not know how to get tired” (St. Peter Chrysologus), and when God loads us with his tender mercies, we are “so overwhelmed with his benefits, that we are unable to feel any other burden” (St. Bernard). What would we do in moments of crisis without these comforting words of Jesus: You will find rest. St. Bernard puts it all in perspective: “The world cries out, I will disappoint you; the flesh cries out, I will kill you. Christ cries out, I will refresh you. To whom will you go?” #bible #christianity #jesuschrist #God #faith #prayerworks #ypシ #quotes #DailyGod
